Have you ever wondered how much time it takes to paint a mural?
Time to paint a mural depends on various factors: Is it indoor or outdoor? How complex is the artwork/design? Does it require work-from-height tools or equipments? Does the artwork/design have multiple colours or limited colours (3 colours or less)?
I painted a Sunflower mural recently for a Community Center's Resident Network. This was a design provided by the town council because they had a limited budget and did not want an artist to design a unique artwork. It was totally alright because there will be some projects that would just require a 'painter', I just took the opportunity as a way to exercise my skillset and earned some small income.
A sunflower mural for the Resident Network that is identified as Sunflower in its name. I took 2 days (6 hours each day) and painted solo. I thought this mural was manageable compared to some of my other external facade murals, where I needed art assistants to support in completing the painting. Here are some process of the mural painting:
Started with an outline. My art school professor used to tell me: Drawing is everything.
Started to fill in with colours. I prefer to work on a specific colour palette at a go.
Blessed with an ice milo from the staff, Singapore can get really warm anywhere.
Started to add greens to the mural.
Final look of the sunflower mural done in 12 hours over 2 days. What do you think? I am pretty sure you will be able to tell that the Residents' Network is Ang Mo Kio-Hougang Sunflower. 🤭 It is pretty obvious.
Till my next wall mural!
